Wednesday Keynote Speaker - Lisa Borre, Cary Institute - Managing Lakes in a Changing World: Think Global, Act Local

Lisa BorreLisa Borre is a Senior Research Specialist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and provides research support for Dr. Kathleen C. Weathers, co-chair of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON), and project coordination for Lake Observer, a mobile application for recording lake and water observations across the globe. She works remotely from her home base in Annapolis, MD and is Region 3 Director (2017-2019) of the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS); on the Advisory Council of the Lake Champlain Committee, and an investigator with the SAFER Project: Sensing the Americas' Freshwater Ecosystem Risk from Climate Change. She writes about global lake topics for National Geographic's Water Currents blog.


Thursday Keynote Speaker - Craig Williamson, Miami University - Why Are Lakes Turning Browner and Why Does it Matter?

Craig Williamson

Dr. Craig Williamson is the Ohio Eminent Scholar of Ecosystem Ecology at Miami University in Ohio where he leads the Global Change Limnology Laboratory. His expertise is in the ecology of UV radiation and climate change, with a current focus on the effects of browning on lakes. His research is based at the Lacawac Sanctuary and Biological Field Station in the Poconos of PA, but extends worldwide. Research questions range from UV effects on the ecology of infectious diseases to deploying advanced sensors to decipher the sentinel responses of lakes to climate change. He is the Chief Scientific Adviser of the Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network (PLEON), an outreach program on public education and monitoring of Pocono lakes. He is active in the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) where he leads the Climate Sentinels Working Group, and serves on the United Nations Environment Programme Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (UNEP EEAP).

Commercial Exhibitor Registration is $225 and includes 1 full registration, 8’x8’ space w/ 6’ skirted table, chair, and electrical hookup.  Exhibitors set up is Tuesday March 6th (7-9pm) or Wednesday March 7th (7:00-7:45am).  Exhibitor space will be assigned.  Tear down will take place about 3pm March 8th.

Donate to Silent Auction - PALMS is seeking items for the Silent Auction to support the Scholarship Fund. Donations from individuals and companies are welcome. Suggested donations: gift certificates, sampling equipment, books, lake related products, art work, or anything else that you think would be of interest to our attendees. Conference Cancellation Policy

Late Registration and Walk-Ins:

  • Registrations made on or after February 28, 2018 will incur an additional $25 fee.
  • Walk-in registrations (including 24hours before conference) will have an additional $50 fee.
  • No refund for cancellations made on or after February 28, 2018.

Once again the conference committee has put together a terrific lineup of speakers on a host of lake related subjects including in-lake management, watershed management, invasive species control, blue-green algae, as well as others.

The Pennsylvania Lake Management Society is seeking abstracts for oral presentations at the 28th Annual PALMS Conference. The conference will be held March 7 & 8, 2018 at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center, State College, PA. The deadline to submit an abstract is December 20, 2017. If your abstract is accepted, you will be notified no later than January 9, 2018.  Click on the link below for abstract submission details.

Individuals are responsible for making their own reservations. When making reservations please request a room in the “PALMS Conference” block, code CGPA03”. Reservations must be made by February 20, 2018 to guarantee room and to receive the group rate. Reservations received after this date will be honored on a rate and space-available basis. Free full breakfast buffet is provided for overnight guests. Check in is after 4:00 PM and check out is before 11:00 AM.

Nominations for Board of Directors

The Pennsylvania Lake Management Society is now accepting nominations for its board of directors to be voted on at the 2018 annual conference. Nominations are open for the positions of President Elect, Treasurer, as well as Regional Director positions for the Eastern, Central, and Western region of Pennsylvania (one for each region). Please send nominations by February 1, 2018 to Robert Schindler by e-mail to BSchindler@solitudelake.com. Please include contact information of the person being nominated so the nominating committee can ascertain if that person will accept the nomination. 
Any nominations after the February 1 deadline must be made from the floor on the first day of the annual conference. All nominations from the floor, if accepted by the nominee, will be a write-in candidate next to the position for which they were nominated.

The Pennsylvania Lake Management Society (PALMS) will present awards to recognize organizations and individuals that have contributed to the science of lake and watershed management in 2017. These awards were established to encourage the advancement of the principle goal of PALMS: the development of partnerships among citizens, scientists, and professionals to foster the protection and management of lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. These awards are an excellent opportunity to recognize the many outstanding efforts of organizations and individuals.

Annual Photo Contest

Submit your best Pennsylvania lake or pond photograph to the 17th Annual PALMS Photo Contest! Winners will be selected at the 28th Annual PALMS Conference on March 8, 2018. You are not required to be present to win. Prizes will be awarded for the top three photos. In addition, the first place photo may be featured on the PALMS website and showcased in the PALMS newsletter What’s Wet.
